Full Description
Akaka Falls State Park offers a self-guided and short (0.4 mile loop) walk through a tropical rainforest on your way to see two stunning waterfalls. The Akaka Falls Loop Trail hike is really a walk on a paved route and easy for most visitors but note that there are stairs to deal with and the path is not wheelchair accessible.

The first waterfall is the 100 foot tall Kahuna Falls. Continue on and you'll approach the viewing area for the incredible Akaka Falls which is a 442 foot, free falling waterfall and probably the Big Island's most famous waterfall.

Bring a camera and plan on spending about an hour to do the walk and see the falls. You'll pay $5 per car to get in (or $1 per person if on foot).

Absolutely a beautiful location. The hike around the park is so beautiful and peaceful we just could not get enough of it. When you stop and listen to the sounds of nature around you just can’t help but forget about all your worries. I would highly recommend this location. There is a $5.00 fee to park but so worth it.

The waterfalls were beautiful and it was a gorgeous walk thru the trails to see them. It was not crowded when we were there so didn't have to fight a lot of people on the narrow trails. Was an easy walk and not difficult at all. Would recommend for the beauty and adventure. Parking costs are very minimal.

A lovely twenty minute loop trail takes you to the Akaka Falls, probably the most spectacular waterfall I have seen in Hawaii. The rain forest is beautiful and all the way along the trail we could hear the birds singing (although we didn't see them!) and the sound of the falls. Worth the drive from Hilo.

Akaka Falls State Park is worth the trip. I've been here three times, and each time the parking lot is full. The path to the waterfall is pleasant, with lush tropical growth everywhere. Not happy with paying a fee to walk the trail, but if that's what it takes to keep the path maintained, so be it. The falls are impressive, especially after substantial rainfall.

This is a beautiful hike. There are stairs to navigate, however, my 94 y/o MIL had no problems walking the entire trail. There are so many photo opportunities; take the time to enjoy the flora and fauna as you walk. My favorite view is when the falls just comes into sight as one descends the stairs towards the falls. Stop at Mr. Ed's Bakery on the way out for a treat or your choice of fabulous jams/jellies.

Akaka Falls is a nice place to explore and one of the most beautiful falls on the island. It is about 0.4 miles to walk around the waterfall area in a loop. There are lots of beautiful spots on the trail to take amazing photographs. Just remember to bring mosquito repellent, and spray yourself well because there are a lot of them.

Definitely, a must see on the big island. The drive there is long from Kona but very scenic. You have to walk a short ways to the falls. When we were there one of the trails was closed. I don't know if it is open now. Will go back the next time we are on the island.

Lots of steps/stairs, no rush, there is so much to see on your way down and back up from the viewing stand. bathrooms, which I didn't expect. Not great parking but I thought it was fine, if you make it too easy to many people would come. The hills in the area are just stunning.

Akaka Falls is about a 1/2 hour drive from Hilo. There is a short hike to see the waterfalls. You can see 2 waterfalls on this hike, Kahuna Falls, and Akaka Falls. The path is paved and has stairs. Bring your bug repellent because there are lots of Mosquitos. There are restrooms and picnic tables near the parking lot. Parking is $5 a car. Kama'aina park for free.
