I've been meaning to stop at Via Gelato for a while now as I keep passing it after filling up on various lunch places nearby. Today was the day to give it a try and I'm really impressed. I'm not an ice cream fan or really even a dessert fan most of the time. I enjoy those things on rare occasions but I just don't often have a sweet tooth. But I could see myself frequenting Via Gelato when I'm nearby.
The shop is bright, clean, and staffed by friendly folks so that's half the battle. They offer quite a large selection of Gelato, at least a dozen flavors I'd guess. I almost went for the one named Frosted Flakes because, well, it looked like vanilla frosting. But then I spotted the caramel gelato and that was a no-brainer for me. Oh so tasty! It has big, chewy chunks of caramel buried in it as well.
What I really liked is how smooth, fluffy, and airy the gelato was. No need to chew it like an ice cream, it almost melts in your mouth like a cotton candy. Just spot on perfect stuff.
They offer several sizes but the smallest keiki size is plenty for me and costs around $3. Not cheap for a few ounces of gelato, but since that's plenty for most people it's a bargain for a dessert. They also offer various fancy coffees if that's your thing, but at least without the overly pretentious coffee house atmosphere.
Bottom line, two big and happy thumbs way up.
