Matt Anderson's Take
Kahalu'u Beach is a great place for snorkeling with a huge variety of marine life to view, including sea turtles. It is protected by a partially submerged rock wall that keeps out large waves and stronger currents so it can be well protected from the open ocean and a safe place to snorkel.

The reef makes water entry difficult in most places, but talk with the lifeguard and they'll show you the best route to get into the water which is near the southwest side of the beach.

So while this is a great place for snorkeling, it's not as great when it comes to being a sandy beach to hang out on because the sand here is really rocky. So if you're not coming to snorkel then there are better beaches you can find than this one.

This place does pack in the crowds with both visitors and locals alike so if you're coming out then you'll have the best experience if you arrive earlier in the day. It also gets crowded for sunset viewings as well.

The Kahalu'u Snack Wagon food truck is often around here so you can grab some snacks, a quick lunch, or shave ice.

This is a lovely beach with plenty of things to do. They had tents set up for eating under an dye had plenty of food trucks. However going in a Saturday is terrible, the parking was bad and it was hard to find a place to sit and eat. If you go to this beach make it a week day when it is not so busy.

A popular local hangout with residents of Kailua-Kona. After work, locals will come here relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset. It's not uncommon to get a whiff of pakalolo in the air.

Families will have birthday parties in the pavilion that overlook the reef and bay while children enjoy playing in the water. Snorkeling is good at Kahalu'u Beach, with a variety of reef fish to check out. Swim groups will practice here as well.

There's a reef to explore, but it's quite slippery - so be careful. There is a lifeguard tower and restroom facilities. It's a good beach for families with children since the ocean here is protected by waves from a reef. As a tourist, there are better beaches to visit, but if you live nearby, Kahalu'u Beach is a great place to relax after work.

Kahalu'u Beach is a small black sand beach at the end of Ali'i Drive. It is usually very busy with tourists and surfing schools, but don't let that deter you from stopping here. There is really great snorkeling! And the best part is you don't have to go on a boat tour to see the awesome fish that live in Hawaiian waters. There are usually turtles swimming around as well as a ton of colorful fish who are pretty used to people being around and are not shy. There are restrooms and a covered pavilion with picnic tables. There is usually a food truck there that sells drinks, shave ice, ice cream, etc.
