About Chicken in a Barrel
Chicken in a Barrel
Full Description
Looking for good BBQ on Kauai? You're not likely to find many options but Chicken in a Barrel is one of them and this one is located in the Hanalei Center shopping mall area.

The people here were instantly friendly and helpful when we walked in and the place has a pretty good vibe going on and feels very relaxed.

I tried the sampler platter which included some pulled pork, beef brisket, one rib (yes, 1), some chicken, a scoop of rice, and a cup of chili. It was a fair amount of food but felt a little pricey at $15. It was all really good, and topping things off with their spicy BBQ sauce (which wasn't remotely spicy) made it even better.

I really enjoyed everything on my plate and the chili was notably good (very stew like chili) but I wasn't wowed by anything. I'd order it again without a second thought but I won't be dreaming about it. If it was a bit cheaper I'd probably give it a 4.5 star rating but that's okay, I'll be back.

Really enjoyed the BBQ chicken here, excellent overall. The menu is pretty good with plenty of different options. Wasn't too busy but food does take a while to come out.

Sometimes you're in the mood for BBQ food. Sometimes you're on the remote part of an outer island in Hawaii. And sometimes you're lucky enough to experience both at the same time. Let's face it "Chicken in a Barrel " is a catchy name. If you like Southern BBQ, the name of this place Will hook you in. Chicken in a Barrel restaurant has that shack look to it, but it is by design. There are a few tables both indoors and a counter to place your order.

Choosing what to order was an ordeal. Everything looks so good.BBQ chicken, pork ribs, fish tacos, BBQ beef, chili–what to do. I ordered two tacos–one fish, one chicken. They were good but tasted better with the BBQ sauce. Yes, I put BBQ sauce on my fish taco. But after eating this, I was craving more. So I bummed some food off of Matt's sampler plate. That was the one to order. The chicken was moist and tender with a smoky flavor. The beef rib was the same. The meat came right off the bone. Delicious.

But that still wasn't enough. I ordered a bowl of chili too. The chili was mildly spicy with a stew like quality to it. Really good, but I was expecting a meatier traditional chili. The folks that work there were very attentive and interested in what we thought about the food. In fact, the lady behind the counter was keeping tabs on me. She was joking about how much I was chowing down. Good thing I'm not sensitive! It was all in good fun.

I enjoyed the company, the food, and the atmosphere in downtown Hanalei. Is it the best BBQ I've ever had? No, but it's still pretty good.
Next time, I will order the sampler plate for myself instead of mooching food from Matt.

We decided to try the Hanalei Chicken in a Barrel since we loved the Kapaa location so much. I got the sampler plate. I thought it was good, a little too much pepper for me, but still good. I substituted the chili beans for Hawaiian-style coleslaw. It was very tasty. I did think it was a little pricey ($16.65 for my sampler plate) but when we showed our Hawaii IDs (Kama'aina) we saved $5 off our total bill.
