Savage Shrimp is your classic tale of boy starts shrimp truck, boy turns shrimp truck into a brick and mortar restaurant. Okay, so it's not really a classic tale but that's what happened here. And maybe it wasn't a boy since it was all women running the show when we went.
Either way, this place is really popular judging by the oodles of online reviews, the amount of customers who come here, and the writing on the walls. I mean that last one literally, as you can write your name, comments, or whatever on the walls which are fully covered. I'm still trying to figure out how one person wrote on the ceiling.
You'll find Savage Shrimp at the Kukui'ula Village Shopping Center and you'd better like shrimp if you are eating here. Personally, I'm not a huge shrimp fan so I found a single non-shrimp item on the menu which was the Pork Tacos and ran with it.
For $10.95 I received two tacos (double corn tortillas on each) that had some Kalua pork in them and then what appeared to be 68 pounds of cabbage on top along with some sauce, a slice of pineapple, a slice of avocado, and a side of salsa. They were big tacos but were 75% shredded cabbage. Too much is better than not enough but it was a bit much and made them very difficult to eat. I would have much preferred the same amount of ingredients spread over three tacos.
As for taste? Delicious. Not the best I've had but far better than average. I'd order them again in a second. The price is probably a tiny bit high but I left full so I was happy. A soda was a reasonable $1.50 only to find out that every single soda in the machine was empty except Sprite. Lame.
The ladies running this place are super friendly and nice and you can tell they truly want you to have a good time and great meal and they seem genuinely happy to serve you. While this used to be a cash only restaurant they do accept credit cards now which is a good thing.
