When you drive through the little town of Haleiwa, as your approaching the bridge, you'll see a line of people waiting to taste Matsumoto's legendary shave ice. Why is it so popular? Matsumoto has perfected the method for creating very fine ice that melts in your mouth like snow. The syrups are homemade which adds to the novelty. But beyond the hype you read about in the tourist books, shave ice is refreshing when the weather is warm and your touring around the island. The employees do their best to pump out shave ice, but the line never seems to subside.
Matsumoto serves good shave ice, and if you are on the North Shore, you can check this off to the "been there, done that" column. But for the true shave ice connoisseur, you need to try Ailana Shave Ice in Honolulu.
