Kooks Beach is a pretty great and well hidden beach area and it's easier to find that you might think. It's located on the north side of Maui in the Paia area. From the Hana Highway (near Kahului Airport), head north onto Spreckelsville Road which will immediately turn into Stable Road.

Drive down about 3/4 of a mile and look for a right hand turn with a yellow gate on either side of it. That will lead you right to the beach and a small parking lot (that's likely not full).

The water here is very clear and just an excellent shade of blue. Much of the area is protected by an offshore reef so the water by the shore tends to be pretty calm (assuming the ocean is calm).

Not many people seem to come back here and that's too bad because it's just really nice, secluded, and has beautiful views. There are no facilities here and no amenities but it's just so neat back here that none of that matters.

On one visit here we met a local gentleman named Michael who came to do some spearfishing. He was trying to talk me into joining him and was eager to show me how to do it. Unfortunately, we didn't have the time to spare but we had a great chat with him for a while. It just goes to show that locals often love to talk story about their island and share their history, tell stories of the old days, and even educate you in the process.

Next time you see an old timer at the beach go and chat them up. And I use the term old timer in a positive and respectful way because Michael might have technically been a senior citizen but he could out swim, out run, and out do most people less than half his age (easily myself included).
