One of Honolulu’s oldest streets, dating back the early 1800’s, is Vineyard Boulevard. This street led to the grape vineyards of Spaniard, Don Francisco De Paula Y Marin. Marin was born in 1774, from Andalusia Spain. When he arrived in Hawaii in 1793, he became Kamehameha I and the Royal Family’s trusted business adviser, interpreter, accountant, and physician for several years.
From his trips around the Pacific and South America, he introduced exotic plants and fruits such as pineapple, guava, papaya and avocado. This mufti-talented and inspired man also produced coconut oils, soap, molasses, nails, candies, pickles, cigars, milling sugar and was able to produce rum and brandy. That wasn’t enough for him as he also raised dairy cows, hogs, rabbits and goats on Moku’umeume (Ford Island P.H.). A father to over 20 children, since he was married 3 times.
