6.9 Quake On Big Island As Lava Erupts

The Big Island was hit by a huge earthquake today that registered as a magnitude 6.9 quake, shaking the Big Island and even being felt on the island of Oahu (around 200 miles away). This is the largest quake to hit the island since 1975 and caused small tsunami waves (though those waves didn't cause any damage). Around 14,000 people lost power and it's said that around half are back up with power now.

There are now 6 fissures confirmed in the Puna area, with each being several hundred yards long, and mandatory evacuations in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens are in effect. The current set of hundreds of quakes (most in the magnitude 2 range) and current flows are being compared to explosive 1955 eruption.
