Kaunakakai, Hawaii

Kaunakakai is the main town on Molokai and located on the south shore. King Kamehameha V had a summer there named Ala Malama. The main street in the town was named after this home. It is the largest city in Molokai and there is a song called "The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai", which made this town famous in the 1930's.

It's a throwback to another era when life was simpler. Kaunakakai is adjacent to the main harbor for Molokai. You'll see fishermen prepping their boats much like they've been doing for decades. There is a long pier you can walk down to get a nice view of Kaunakakai from the ocean.

There are a shops to enjoy, but not a lot do here. There is a market to pick your necessities, but don't expect to find all the goods you'd have on Oahu. People from Molokai travel to Oahu to hit Costco or Target for goods. The most popular place to eat on Molokai is Kanemitsu's Bakery, where people line up late in the afternoon to get fresh hot bread.

You will find Waialua Beach Park, Sandy Beach, and Hotel Molokai here.
