Sergs Mexican Kitchen Nalo - Restaurants On Oahu Waimanalo, Hawaii

Serg's is an interesting authentic Mexican food restaurant. It's very small inside so you actually order outside at a little window. If you are eating there you then go inside to get a table as well as pick out whatever salsa or hot sauces you want to try (they offer several).

The service here was very friendly and the food is delicious. We tried the enchiladas with shredded beef which came with a side of rice and beans for $11. These are some of the best enchiladas I've ever had and the rice and beans were perfect.

We also tried a steak taco ($3) which was excellent, though had some fatty bits on the steak. We then tried a huge chicken chimichanga ($10) which was very good but a little bland by itself, though that problem was then solved with some of their tasty hot sauces.

Overall, we'd give this place 5 stars if judged purely on the taste of the food alone. But that's not how we do things and we look at the big picture of every place when rating it. Serg's is close to perfection but it does have some flaws that are currently stopping it from getting a 5 star review from us.

First off, it's a hole in the wall Mexican joint and that's part of its charm and while we don't expect a place like this to pass a strict white glove test we do expect it to be cleaner than it is. The dining area isn't horrible, but it's far from clean and when you look through the small window to the kitchen you get a tiny glimpse into a third world country and what is seen cannot be unseen. It might be cleaner than it looks but it might also be worse.

Second, while all of the items that we tried tasted excellent I did notice a huge hunk of pure fat in the middle of my steak taco. It fell out as I picked it up and you can see it in the bottom right of the steak taco picture above. Not a big deal, but that's not quite the quality control I'm looking for in my taco preparation because getting a bit mouthful of nasty fat is just gross.

Third is the parking issue. There are only a few spots and they're all right off the main street. I mean right off of it, which means that when you back out of your spot you are backing out onto the main street which makes getting out an adventure. This isn't a deal breaker and we don't fault Serg for this but it's bad enough that it needs to be mentioned.

So that's one fairly big complaint (cleanliness) and two very minor complaints that really keep this place from meeting it's full potential. We'll keep an eye on this place and make updates here if the cleanliness issue improves.
