What are those green, yellow, and red signs in restaurants? We'll explain them all here.

Features
• General: Educational • General: Health / Wellness / Spirituality

Have you seen those green colored signs in the windows of your favorite restaurant and wondered what it was? Well, hopefully it was green because green means they passed their health inspection!

The signs come from the State of Hawaii Department of Health and are part of their Food Safety Program. They come in three colors to show how well each food establishment conforms to the health laws.

Green - Pass
This is the one you want to see. It's a green sign and will ready "PASS" in big letters at the top. If you see this it means that the restaurant had few or no violations of the health code.

Yellow - Conditional Pass
A yellow colored sign indicates a possible problem. It means the restaurant had two or more health code violations. If you see this don't eat there. The next business day they'll be inspected again.

Red - Epic Fail
If you see a red sign at a restaurant that's a sign to run away and go some place else. In fact, you'll have no choice because the restaurant will be shut down until they resolve their violations.

How Often Do They Inspect?

In theory, a food establishment should be inspected three times per year. But check the inspection date on the sign to see when they were last inspected to be sure.

Why Can't I Check Online?

Great question! The Health Department says we will be able to see inspections reports online. But don't hold your breath on that. According to this report, they've blown $170,000.00 on creating a website to do that with no results. Sounds like they're starting over because when something doesn't work. Well, throw more money at it! Seriously folks, we'd be happy to do it for FREE and make it part of LookIntoHawaii.com! Drop is a line if you're interested.
