The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is a mega resort with a mega sized pool area. You'll find this incredible place in the Koloa area on the south side of Kaua'i. The hotel is quite large with 602 rooms but since it isn't a high rise hotel it's more of a sprawling compound on over fifty acres.

The Rooms

A variety of suites and rooms are available at the Grand Hyatt Kauai with the high floor being level six.

Housekeeping does a great job here as you can see by our photos. I leave a daily tip for housekeeping (see Tipping) in any hotel I stay at but this was the first time I've had the housekeeper actually handwrite a thank you note (on two separate trips no less). Nice touch.

Ceiling fans that are actually quiet is a nice touch. Rooms also include a small lanai (balcony) area, a mini fridge, safe, and coffee maker with Starbucks brand coffee. Rooms feel large and include a TV and a small table.

Grand Club

This Hyatt property has a Grand Club lounge which is an extra feature you can add onto your reservation if you wish. It's a lounge that serves up continental breakfast in the morning, snacks and drinks during the day, pupus for dinner, and desserts for, well, dessert.

After making our reservation we got an email that allowed us to pay $140 extra per night for access to the Grand Club level so we figured we would try it here and see how it was.

The breakfast options were pretty limited even for a continental breakfast. Daytime snacks weren't much, and the dinner pupus weren't anything special. Desserts were okay but mostly cookies and a cupcake or piece of cake. They have alcoholic beverage options but they charge you $6 per drink (and they're small). We have a hard time recommending the club level here.

I've stayed club level at other hotels with much better results so I wouldn't do it again here unless the price was under $50 per night.

The Pool

This is a very popular resort and just an overall gorgeous property and a big part of that is the amazing pool area they have. It's very lush and tropical and that really makes the pool area feel like a secluded clear blue pond that was formed in black lava rock in a lush tropical jungle. It's one of the nicest looking pools I've seen at any resort.

It's essentially a couple of giant pools that meanders all over the property with lazy river like passages. There is also a decent sized water slide to play on that kids and even adults will love. When that gets boring walk a few feet over to their manmade saltwater lagoon which is equally beautiful, crystal clear, and has it's own (course) sandy beach area.

There is also an adult pool and several hot tub areas sprinkled throughout. My only wish for the pools here would be another slide or two, more shade, more beach chairs, and less burning hot flagstone on the ground.

The Beach

If you want the real thing then you're just a few more steps away from Keoneloa Beach (Shipwreck's Beach) which has plenty of sandy beach and water to play in. This is also the beach where you'll see people doing some cliff jumping. The downside to this beach is that it's often dangerous to swim in due to the shore breaks so you're probably better off in the saltwater pool instead unless you know what you're doing.

Food

Some of the dining options include Tidepools Restaurant, Dondero's, Ilima Terrace, Seaview Terrace, Poipu Bay Clubhouse, Stevenson's Library, Captain's Bar, and many other nearby offsite options.

Poolside drink and food service is offered and several options are offered. If you see a food service person and are in any way planning to eat or drink grab them as soon as you see them because it takes a long time before they make the rounds again.

Activities

When you're done in the water you can hit the nearby links at Poipu Bay Resort Golf Club. If you're here on business you'll find all of the usual Hyatt business center amenities as well as 65,000 square feet of conference / meeting room space.

Kids will enjoy the Camp Hyatt Kids Club. Expect to pay around $50 to $80 per kid for half to full day camp. I'd love to see this at a more reasonable price or be included for free like some other resorts now offer. I think many resorts are starting to see the light that if the kids can be taken in for free us adults are more likely to eat at the pricey onsite restaurants! Hint, hint!

If you're looking to pamper yourself then you'll be interested in the onsite Anara Spa which offers a huge list of spa treatments. If you want a more active lifestyle then the fitness center is for you but I prefer to get my exercise from the stairs that lead up to the waterslide.

Conclusion

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is an amazing resort property. It has a great pool area that could be a little bit better with another slide or two. It's very well maintained overall and has very clean rooms.

The biggest issues for most people will be with the prices. A room here is likely to run over $400 per night and up (cheaper during off season perhaps). Even at that rate you still have room taxes and daily resort fees.
