Isaac Hale Beach Park Pohoiki - Beaches On Big Island Pahoa, Hawaii

Located in the Puna District, Issac Hale Beach Park at Pohoiki Bay is an oceanfront beach park with large and open grassy areas, picnic tables, a pavilion, and a ramp to launch boats. It's known for its excellent surfing. It's also a family friendly beach park and has a playground area for kids, but it's poor for swimming due to the strong rip tides on this part of the island.

Experienced, strong swimmers should only venture out into the open water on either side of the ramp. However, this is an active boat launch, so be mindful that local fishermen will launch their boats here. If you're a surfer, you'll have to cross some course lava rocks with crashing surf before you can paddle out.

There's a natural geothermal pool nearby that you can find by walking along the shoreline trail to the right of the boat ramp that heads inland about 150 yards. It is isolated with tropical vines, and lush growth. There are great views from the ocean from this little slice of paradise. It's humid, moist, and has tons of mosquitos so you may want to bring repellant.

When coming from Pahoa, travel south on Highway 130 until it dead ends at Highway 137. Then go right until you reach mile marker 11. Look for sign for Isaac Hale Beach Park.

Again, swimming should be done with caution as there are strong currents, but this beach can be great for snorkeling, surfing, and scuba diving when conditions are good.

Fun Fact: Isaac Hale Beach Park is named after Isaac Keepo'okalani Hale, who was a member of the royal family. He served and died in the Korean War.
