Hilo Bayfront Beach Park can often have murky water and isn't good for swimming, though snorkeling and scuba are good further out. This is a popular beach for surfing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and picnicking.

Hilo Bayfront Beach is a black sand beach that's more of a locals hangout than a touristy beach. Locals use this beach for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and various other events.

Parking is plentiful and showers and restrooms are available. The beach itself is nothing spectacular but still neat to see and enjoy some pretty views if you're in the area. Swimming is not recommended here due to hazardous waves and currents.

As for that murky water we mentioned, it's especially bad on the east side where the Wailoa River empties into the ocean. Any time you see murky waters you'll want to avoid those as sharks prefer hunting in murky waters (see Shark Attacks In Hawaii).

Nearby you will find the Pacific Tsunami Museum. This area was hit by two devastating tsunamis in 1946 and 1960 that took many lives. Be sure to stop by.
